The world is becoming a crazy place. What was once considered perfectly acceptable is not looked upon with resentment and outright hatred. How did things ever get this messed up? If you're wondering what we're talking about, it could be just about anything. But for the purposes of this article we'll stick to one of the biggest sticking points of the world today. Christmas at the workplace, wherever or whatever that workplace was, used to be a wonderful time. Coworkers would all gather round and exchange presents, have holiday treats and basically take a day off from work. At least they didn't do a lot of it. This was true whether you worked in an office or even a government agency. It was accepted that when Christmas came around you would celebrate. And part of that celebration involved the decoration of the workplace itself. Christmas trees went up with gay abandon. You might even see a nativity scene or two depending on how creative your coworkers were. The office was certainly festive in appearance. One couldn't walk into it and not know it was Christmas. But not anymore. Somewhere along the way, people starting taking offense to Christians shoving their religion down their throats, as if that was really what was happening. The complaints started coming fast and furious. Somebody had to do something or there was going to be a riot. Well, somebody did do something. Today, it is almost impossible to find a workplace that has a Christmas party. Now, it's a holiday party. Schools no longer have a Christmas break. It's now called a winter break. And the decorations they used to have are all gone. Government buildings altogether have lost all signs of holiday spirit. What happened? Why was something that was so widely accepted for so many years now considered taboo? What went wrong and what started it? What happened is that we have become a nation that is now politically correct. We go so far out of our way not to offend anybody that we end up offending everyone. The court battles involving people fighting for the right to put up Christmas decorations at their place of employment have become a joke. Judges must be thinking that there has to be a better use of their time. Regardless of whether it is right or wrong to ban Christmas or other holiday decorations and celebrations, the outcome of it is that we're no better off for it. People are taking offense to what they call discrimination and if anything there is less peace in the world now than there was when you could walk into an office Christmas party. Maybe we just need to go back to a simpler time when people could celebrate their faith and not have to worry about being hauled into a court of law. Supposedly in the United States there is supposed to be a separation between church and state. Well, maybe it's time to just let business owners do what they want. After all, it's just a Christmas tree. |
